I love this cake which was a staple in my mum’s kitchen when I was a kid. After seeing this technique on Pinterest, I decided to give it a twist for Valentine’s day. So here it is!
Ingredients:
250g butter
2 pinches of salt
250g sugar
2 vanilla sugar packs
4 eggs
500g flour
1 pack baking powder
10cl milk
225g dark chocolate
How to:
Preheat the oven on 180°C.
Mix the butter, the sugar, the salt, the egg yolks (keep the whites apart) until smooth.
Add the milk and the flour slowly.
Melt the chocolate “au bain marie”
Whisk the egg whites until fluffy and incorporate delicately to the batch.
Separate the dough in two equal parts and add the melted chocolate to one of them. Keep the other one plain.
Pour the chocolate batter in a cake mold (I use silicon, if you don’t, make sure you grease it first) and bake in the oven for almost an hour (from 45mn, you will have to try and see if the cake is ready and not burning). Towards the end of the time, you can cover the top of the cake with foil (be careful not to open the oven at the beginning of the baking otherwise the cake won’t rise).
Once the chocolate cake is done, let it cool. Then cut it in rather thick slices (2cm), with a heart shape cookie cutter, get a heart of each slice.
In the mold, pour 1/3 of the plain dough, place all the chocolate hearts gently in a row. Pour the rest of the plain dough and cook for 45mn to an hour (again, think of checking for the cake not too burn on the top by adding foil 15mn before the end.)
Enjoy your slices of love with your valentine 🙂
